Schedule down time

A while back I wrote a post about scheduling free time. The basic idea is this: by "scheduling" unstructured time, I give myself the opportunity to have some of my best ideas, mostly applied to my new startup but also to this blog and a few other areas of interest.

Now I've realized the importance of scheduling down time. That is, even the most stubborn, busy person needs to make sure they have time to just do nothing. Otherwise sooner or later you'll just go crazy.

The trade off is finding "time" to relax. That sounds ridiculous to some people, but I struggle to find time to just do nothing. If I'm not working on my startup then I'm working on school, and if I'm not doing either I'm likely visiting my girlfriend in NYC. But if I'm not doing that, then I'm with friends, and if I'm not with friends then I'm probably asleep.

It's tough to schedule down time, and it's even tougher communicating to the above groups that you need that down time. It's a tradeoff I struggle to make all the time but I think it's one of the most important things any entrepreneur should do.

I've really seen firsthand that it's important to schedule down time if you can't find it regularly. I consider this a tough lesson learned from my latest entrepreneurial journey.
